DPC Doctors
Dra. Rosa Angeles Torres MD was born in Leon, Nicaragua, where she completed her medical education at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua. She was doing an Intensive Care residency when war broke out and she had to move to the United States with her husband, Dr. Oscar, and had one child, Dr. Kissi Blackwell, at the time they made the move.
Dr. Oscar C. Torres, Jr. MD was born in Managua, Nicaragua and has been married to Dra. Rosa for over 40 years. He graduated from medical school from the Universidad Autónoma de Guadalajara in 1980. He practiced medicine in Nicaragua for 2 years before coming to the United States in 1982 because of communism and war.
Together with his wife, barely speaking english, they moved to the US and worked very hard to pass the required medical equivalences before starting residency at the Wichita Falls Family Medicine Residency Program in Wichita Falls, TX. Upon completion, Dra. Rosa worked as a faculty member in the same program.They graduated from the Wichita Falls Family Medicine Residency program in 1991 and 1992.
They opened their own practice, Texoma Familly Clinic, in 1991 in Burkburnett, Texas and spent 23 years in a private practice before joining United Regional Physicians Group. In January of 2019, they decided to open Texoma Direct Primary Care (DPC) here in Burkburnett, Texas, making it the first DPC clinic in Burkburnett!
Joining their Daughter Dr. Kissi Blackwell on the airwaves, Dr. Rosa Torres and Dr. Oscar Torres share their story on today's episode! From a tumultuous journey from Nicaragua to the US, they share their journey to becoming physicians. They share how they went from running their own clinic to working for the local hospital system and then leaving to open their clinic again under the DPC model!
