Dr. Vasanth Kainkaryam

Dr. Vasanth Kainkaryam (KINE-CURRY-UM) completed his undergraduate degree in the Biological Sciences and in Linguistics at Cornell University and went on to pursue his M.D. at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. He subsequently trained at Baystate Medical Center/Western Campus of Tufts University School of Medicine in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, and then went on to pursuing a degree in Medical Informatics from Northwestern University, focusing on Health Administration Informatics.


He has special interests in shared medical appointments, innovative health care delivery models, patient education, deaf health, adult survivors of childhood illnesses, and especially the application of technology in health care delivery. He carries academic appointments as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Quinnipiac University Frank H. Netter School of Medicine as well as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at UConn School of Medicine.


In his prior practices, including Hartford HealthCare, Iora Health, and First Choice Health Centers, where he has held roles as a Physician and Regional Medical Director, Medical Director, and Chief Medical Officer, respectively,, he has had extensive experience in developing shared medical appointments, helping advise development of electronic health records and patient based communications, and developing Telehealth strategies. While with Iora, he also was the Director for the Fellowship in Primary Care Leadership and Innovation. He has led very successful site visits by HRSA, The Joint Commission, and the Provider Transformation Network, and has led federal grant applications for innovative educational programs.


He is a father of 3 daughters, ranging from 9 years old to 9 months old, and is a husband to an Anesthesiologist. In his spare time, he enjoys writing (his first book is entitiled Suprabhatam), loves traveling the world, learning about different cultures and languages, listening to Indian classical music, and has a passion for baking mini-cupcakes. He speaks Tamil, Kannada, Hindi, French, has basic conversational proficiency in American Sign Language, and has studied Latin as well.


He opened 4 Elements DPC in November 2019.


In today's episode, Dr. Kainkaryam shares about his DPC practice that he opened a day after he left his previous job. He shares his experience transitioning from being an employed physician to being his own boss opening his practice with the design of his ikigai in mind!
